Most of the styles of music that have come about in America (thanks mainly to the influence of African music) over the last century are traditionally learned by ear, or 'aurally'. Jazz, pop, gospel, blues, and funk are all styles of music that have been passed down in this way. Students that I am training in an aural tradition learn to use their ears to assist them in learning musical selections of their choice. Keyboard theory, particularly chords, key signatures, and orchestration, are emphasized over grand staff note reading. Below are a few examples of student projects.
